The target group of young children up to the age of five has been for years one of the most involved age groups in drowning cases in Germany. Realising the problem DLRG looked for a system of information and education to interfere this dramatic development. The idea was to pick up those children in a surrounding where they are already organised in groups and to find an approach which fits into their abilities and interests. A program was borne that qualified lifesavers should go into the kindergarten, teach the parents in aspects of water safety for small children and educate the children themselves in best behaviour at the water and simple questions of self rescue.
To finance the program a sponsor partner was found. The big partner of DLRG Beiersdorf/NIVEA is supporting this campaign. The kindergarten project is today not only well accepted and well known in the public it is at the same time the successful basis of a decrease of drowning figures in this special age group over the last years.
