Abstract

Fifty-seven thousand students enrolled in the course of Physical Education of public colleges in Brazil in 1999 (INEP - Ministry of Education). For many researchers, this course has an important function in accomplishing the prevention of drowning cases, since its object of study is the human being in movement, variable of a larger interest in this process.

Thinking about that, and with the purpose of improving the prevention and reducing the statistics of accidents and deaths by drowning in Brazil, the Integrated Universities of Guarulhos realized the 1st Course of Academic Extension in Aquatic Rescue of the country, in June of 2001. With this course, a small contingent of eight new multipliers broadened the knowledge in the field of drowning prevention. Of this group, five were students of Physical Education. Two of them developed activities of drowning prevention at gyms and sporting clubs in the city of São Paulo, and two accomplished researches in this science at college.

Finally, this work insinuates that, although the professionals of Physical Education are qualified to multiply not only the swimming techniques, but also the prevention and aquatic rescue, it does not mean that there will be a reduction in the mortality caused by drowning in Brazil. The interest of these specialists in this field of knowledge can amplify the diffusion of the prevention measures.
