Abstract

For the fifth consecutive year, the APSI water safety campaign wants to call the public’s, authorities’ and government’s awareness to the child drowning national problem. To promote the adoption of national and local safety measures on water safety and the implementation of rescue, treatment and rehabilitation efficacy strategies are the main objectives oh this campaign.

The campaign engages local seminars, to involve population and local responsibles in their local problems in order to discuss and find local solutions. Parents, educators, health professionals, tourists, owners of swimming pools, wells and tanks, national and local governments are our target groups. TO SUPPORT this CAMPAIGN, APSI produced awareness materials in Portuguese and English (poster, leaflet, postcard and big posters on bus stops) to spread the message of prevention, trying to change attitudes on population.

In 2006, APSI registered 13 fatal drownings, more than half in constructed infra-structures such as pools, tanks and wells. In the first half of the year alone, 6 children already died by drowning in Portugal.

Death by drowning is quick and silent. Don't let the tragedy emerge.
